The year-end Northeast Monsoon brought with it strong winds and heavy rain, making December 2022 a cool and wet month. Standing out against the grey skies, the "Rainbow Block of Hougang"1 – with its rainbow mural painted in bright solid colours – provides a cheerful sight as we welcome the new year. In this issue, we will feature Central Health's largest subzone: Hougang.
There are more than 227,000 residents living in Hougang, making up about a quarter of the total resident population in Central Zone. Hougang also boasts a younger population in relation to the other subzones; with an average age of 42.6 years and 18.1% of the residents aged 65 years and above, as compared to Central Zone's average of 43.9 years and 20.7% respectively.2
With its relatively large geographical area and population size, the Hougang subzone presents ample opportunities for Central Health partners to work together to serve our residents. Like the rest of Central Zone, one in four elderly residents in Hougang experiences some difficulty in performing at least one basic activity (e.g. seeing, hearing, mobility, remembering, self-care, or communicating) and may thus be in need of relevant care services and support.3
Community partners such as St Luke's Eldercare, Home Nursing Foundation, Fei Yue Community Service and many others currently offer Hougang residents a wide range of services. The Communities of Care across the Hougang neighbourhoods will continue to ensure that care is available to those who need it and that residents are in the pinkest of health.
