Needy patients, especially those with little savings and limited family support, often struggle with their out-of-pocket medical expenses which are essential for them to live well at home. These include wheelchairs, walking aids, interim dialysis treatment, breathing equipment, diapers, wound dressings, and more.
One patient who has benefitted is Mr Foo Fung Liang. He was leading a comfortable life as a consultant in the USA until an armed robbery in 2005 left him with a traumatic spinal injury that left him paralysed from the waist down.
He returned to Singapore and underwent surgery at TTSH. “I couldn’t feel anything from the stomach down. I could not walk. This not only affected me physically, but also impacted me psychologically. I have lost my source of income. Because of my condition, I am unable to sit up for more than two or three hours a day, which means that I am not even able to hold down a freelance job.”
The hospital care team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals gave him confidence and helped him progress from the trauma stage to rehabilitation and beyond.
“Rehabilitation equips you with many basic skills, and I am grateful that TTSH Community Fund has provided me with a hospital bed (for home use), an air mattress and a power device to automate my wheelchair. Having a wheelchair and being able to move around on your own helps a lot, because any aerobic exercise makes you feel good. They call it the ‘athlete’s high’. That not only makes us feel good about ourselves, but it also improves the immune system to fight all kinds of diseases.”
