Biodata

Dr. Jacob Oh is a Singapore trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with an international fellowship training in Complex Spine Surgery. He holds the appointment as a Senior Consultant and Deputy head at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He is also the Chief of the Spine Service.

Dr. Jacob Oh graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand, with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB) in 2003. Over the course of his training, he has received the following postgraduate qualifications: Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS), Masters of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery (NUS) and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh (FRCSed Ortho). He is also registered with the Singapore Specialist Accreditation Board.

After his Orthopaedic Training, Dr. Jacob Oh was awarded the prestigious Ministry of Health Scholarship (MOH) for international training and development. During this time, he spent 12 months in North America, at one of the largest spinal units in Canada, where he learned cutting edge procedures such as Minimal invasive surgery, spinal navigation and Adult deformity (scoliosis). At this centre, he was fortunate to be trained by both neurosurgeons and Orthopaedic surgeons who focus exclusively on the spine, drawing the best of both specialties.

Dr Jacob Oh's current practice focuses 100% on spinal surgery. He practices the whole spectrum of spinal surgery which include spinal decompression, fusions, spine tumours, degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, and spinal injuries. His clinical interests are Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (Keyhole/Endoscopy), Adult Spinal Deformity (Scoliosis),  Spinal navigation and Robotics.

Dr Jacob has been performing Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) for over 10 years and is well established in the region for his expertise in this field. He frequently conducts courses both locally and abroad to train other spine surgeons about these advanced techniques. He has been invited to speak at international conferences on numerous occasions, and also sits on the Global advisory board with members from the US, China, UK, Canada, Japan, Korea  as a Key opinion leader for the OLIF procedure (Lateral access Spine fusion).

Passionate about Research and Teaching

Dr Jacob Oh has a keen focus of research and academic work. He has published in over 50 internationally in peer-reviewed medical journals, and presented both locally and internationally about the latest advancements in spine surgery. Besides clinical work, he is actively involved in the teaching of medical students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor by NUS since 2014. He is also the assistant program director (APD) of the NHG Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, teaching and mentoring the next generation of training Orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore. Dr Jacob Oh has also won numerous awards for his contributions in clinical work and teaching. He has received the National Healthcare Group Teaching Award for Senior Doctors and the TTSH Best teacher (Surgery) for 2018 and more recently in 2021, the TTSH top ten teaching award and the Deans award for teaching excellence (NUS YLL School of Medicine).

Active Involvement with Professional Spine Societies

Dr Jacob Oh is an active member of the spine community and serves on the Executive committee of Singapore Spine Society (2018- Present), He is also heavily involved in the AOSpine, the largest international spine community, and was appointed as Country lead for Singapore since 2019. He is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Spine Society (APSS), North American Spine Society (NASS), Society for Lateral Access Surgery (SOLAS), ASEAN MISST and the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS). In Recognition of his expertise in Spine surgery, He has also been appointed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Singapore Medical Council (SMC) to serve on multiple workgroups to help improve patients care.
