Precision in Cancer Prevention – Tailored Management of a Higher-Than-Average Cancer Risk
Most people have no risk factors and have an average lifetime cancer risk. Such ‘Average Risk’ persons are encouraged to go for population-based screening even when healthy. A small group of people have inherited conditions, and have such a high risk of cancer that they are managed in specialised clinics (‘Very High Risk’ persons).
In the middle are persons with one or more risk factors and have a ‘Higher-than- Average Risk’. These people are not well managed and some are treated as ‘Average Risk’ persons and risk having missed cancers. Some are treated like ‘Very High Risk’ persons and are recommended many unnecessary tests.
The goal of the programme is to find the best practices for screening persons at ‘Higher-than-Average’ Risk for breast, colorectal and gastric cancers.
It aims to:
- Provide evidence to support new practices that we believe will accurately detect cancers and reduce the number of unnecessary tests and procedures
- Set up Data Registries to systematically identify trends, patient risk groups, areas of deficiency and areas for improvement, and to continually assess the effectiveness of new practices
- Explore novel strategies that show promise for transforming patient care
