Nurse-led Intravitreal Injection (IVT) Team

Excellence Champion Medal

28 July 2023

IVT has been traditionally and conventionally conducted by doctors with nurses assisting in an outpatient clinic setting. With an ageing population and rising number of patients who require IVT injections, this has placed a heavy burden on the healthcare workforce. The number of doctors at the appropriate level of training was not growing at the same rate as the number of injections required. Hence in order to ensure that patients could have their IVT treatment on time, a training programme was developed to upskill nurses to deliver IVT injections. Through the vigorous programme, accredited nurses can confidently provide the IVT treatment directly to patients and practise at the top of their nursing licenses. Since its implementation in 2021, the nurse-led IVT Programme has grown at a rate of over 40% and now accounts for over 70% of all IVT workload.

Upskilling Nurses to performing IVT injection has boosted staff morale, and improved patient satisfaction."
