Overview

The Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Unit is a subspecialty team that provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of all conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach and intestines, as well as general surgical conditions.

We have an experienced and dynamic team made up of surgeons trained at international centres of excellence in Brisbane, South Korea, Taiwan and USA.

Our services and treatments

Patients with Upper GI complaints can be comprehensively investigated here. Our surgeons are accredited General Surgeons with a subspecialty interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. We provide care for patients with both benign and malignant conditions of the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, pancreas as well as treatment of gallstone disease, primary and recurrent inguinal & ventral hernias, obesity and metabolic disorders.

We perform gastroscopy, colonoscopy & Endoscopic Retrograde CholangioPancreatogram (ERCP) procedures. Examples of the therapeutic options that are available include: injection sclerotherapy, variceal banding, polypectomy, oesophageal stenting, balloon dilatation & percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. We also provide advanced biliary procedures as metallic stenting, laser lithotripsy procedures for biliary stone disease.

Our clinical expertise includes advanced Laparoscopic Surgery & Robotic surgery. Minimally invasive surgery, or keyhole surgery, results in smaller wounds, less blood loss, less pain after surgery, and a shorter hospital stay. Common laparoscopic surgery procedures include laparoscopic hernia surgery, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery or thoracoscopic oesophageal resections. Minimally invasive surgery can also be performed using a Robot. Robotic surgery, the latest in minimally invasive surgery, enables our surgeons to operate with increased precision and unparalleled dexterity. Robotic surgery is best suited for complex procedures such as gastric or oesophageal surgeries.

Bariatric surgery (weight-loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).
