Food refusal is when an individual refuses to eat all or most foods presented to them, and it is commonly seen in people with dementia. It can be managed with several feeding strategies.

When dementia progresses, it affects the throat muscles and the brain's control centre, and you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Coughing when eating
  • Holding food in the mouth
  • Refusing to swallow
  • Spitting out food
  • Frowning when swallowing food
