Biodata

Dr Helen Mi is the Deputy Head of Vitreo-Retina Service and a Consultant with the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute (NHGEI) @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She completed her undergraduate medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 2014, where she graduated with bachelor’s degrees in medicine and surgery. During her undergraduate years, she was selected to pursue a medical elective in the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute under Dr Shannath Merbs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA in 2013. She was subsequently awarded the Ministry of Health Training Award for the Ophthalmology Residency Programme and was conferred her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from the National University of Singapore in 2018. She successfully completed her Ophthalmology specialist exit examination in 2020. She is elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) in 2020, and also elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore) in 2021.

She completed her clinical fellowship in Vitreo-Retina and Medical Retina in 2022 at the NHGEI. She was then awarded the TTSH Training and Development Award and went on to serve as a senior vitreo-retina clinical fellow at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford Eye Hospital in 2023. She was under the tutelage of the renowned vitreoretinal team including Professor Robert MacLaren, Mr CK Patel, Mr Paul Rosen, Mr Sher Aslam, Mr Xue Kanmin and Miss Cehajic-Kapetanovic. She is trained in areas including complex vitreoretinal conditions, retinal genetic disorders, and participated in robotic vitreo-retina invited reviews and surgical trials.

Dr Helen is active in clinical research and has presented in Ophthalmology conferences both locally and internationally. She has published multiple scientific papers in peer-reviewed international Ophthalmology journals, authored book chapters in Ophthalmology books, and is an invited contributor to vitreo-retina magazines such as the Retina Specialist. She is also involved with community service and participated in various projects locally and in the region. She is a member of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmologists (SSO) since 2020 and elected Executive Committe member of the SSO Young Ophthalmologists Chapter since 2022.

Dr Helen's area of clinical interest include surgical vitreo-retina, medical retina, cataracts and general ophthalmology. She is active in education and teaching, and she has served as both chief resident and chief senior resident during her residency. Currently, she is appointed as Content Expert and Clinical Teacher, as well as Clinical Examiner for Ophthalmology with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. She is also appointed as Clinical Tutor with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. At the national level, she is also active in giving medical talks to ophthalmology residents, optometrists, general practitioners, and actively involved in public awareness talks.
