Core Competencies in Geriatric Rehabilitation: Step It Up!

Synopsis

Geriatric rehabilitation aims to address the needs of older adults who face or are at risk of impairment and functional limitations due to geriatric syndromes and common effects related to ageing. Physiotherapists involved in geriatric rehabilitation are tasked with the goals of restoring and maintaining functional independence, as well as enhancing the quality of life for this group of patients.

It is key that physiotherapists involved in geriatric rehabilitation:

  1. possess a sound understanding of common geriatric syndromes and conditions (such as falls, frailty and sarcopenia) and their impact on the older adult,
  2. can perform a comprehensive assessment of function, activity limitations and related impairments,
  3. can deliver effective and evidence-based interventions delivered in a person-centred approach.
