With the growing local population then, disease was widespread and the hospital treated patients with Tuberculosis, Dysentery, Smallpox and more. TTSH had to be relocated again in 1909 to Moulmein Road as the swampy site at Balestier was deemed unhealthy for patients.
To help patients recover better, the pavilion wards that you see here were designed and built for optimal lighting and ventilation to reduce infections. These open-concept wards were also known as the Nightingale wards, following the military hospital wards designed by Florence Nightingale.
Over the years, these wards have been used to care for TTSH and Ren Ci Nursing Home patients.
