As the first and only Limb Lengthening & Reconstruction Surgery (LLRS) unit in Singapore, we provide a unique service catering to a previously unmet need in the country. We treat patients who have significant limb length discrepancies and limb deformities, with the aim of correcting their deformities, restoring function, and ultimately, enabling their return to activity and work.

This is achieved via advanced surgical techniques that utilize Ilizarov principles, circular frames, and other fixation constructs. For severe deformities, we employ computer-assisted hexapod frame technology (based on robotics technology) for extremely precise limb lengthening and deformity correction, which provides the optimal outcome for our patients.

The LLRS service treat patients from a diverse age demographic with a broad spectrum of clinical problems, including:

  • Limb length discrepancies that require limb lengthening
  • Congenital limb deformities
  • Degenerative limb deformities
  • Neurological limb deformities
  • Complex trauma with bone & soft tissue defects
  • Fracture mal-union and non-union resulting in limb deformity
  • Chronic bone and soft tissue infections
  • Implant-related infections

As the nation's leading trauma centre, in conjunction with the large number of geriatric patients who come under our care, TTSH is uniquely positioned to pioneer an LLRS unit that will maximize benefits to patients. The LLRS team will also work closely with the renowned Department of Infectious Diseases in treating patients with chronic bone, soft tissue and implant-related infections. In addition, we are well-placed to treat patients from the adjoining National Neuroscience Institute who develop neurological deformities.

To provide holistic management of the myriad problems besetting our patients with complex deformities, the LLRS service functions as a multi-disciplinary team comprising experienced LLRS-trained orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, and nurses. We also work closely with surgeons from Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery and Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, tapping on their considerable expertise. In addition, the TTSH Foot Care & Limb Design Centre provides synergistic prosthetic and orthotic services for our patients.

Our mission is to provide optimal restoration of form and function to our patients through a multi-disciplinary team that utilizes the best care available.
